College Move-In Survival Guide: Dorms Love Totes More Than Cardboard

Published June 2026 | 5 min read

August is coming. Thousands of families will descend on college campuses with minivans, SUVs, and U-Hauls packed with everything their kids supposedly "need." Narrow hallways will clog. Cardboard boxes will collapse under stairs. Parents will lose their minds. And somewhere around move-in day 3, someone will realize: cardboard sucks.

If you're a parent, student, or RA preparing for dorm move-in, here's the truth: reusable plastic totes are the move. Literally.

Why Totes Beat Cardboard (Every Single Time)

1. They Stack Like Tetris, Not Like Jenga

Cardboard boxes? They crush. They bend. By the time you're carrying the third one up three flights of stairs, the bottom one is a pancake and your stuff is spilling everywhere. Plastic totes with lids? They stack 5 high and hold their shape. Your lamp won't explode halfway up the dorm stairwell.

2. Narrow Hallways Are Their Jam

Dorm hallways are tight. Seriously tight. Standard cardboard boxes are awkward and floppy. Our totes (27″ × 17″ × 12″) fit through doorways without the panic. Parents can move them one-handed. RAs love them.

3. They're Waterproof

Spill something in move-in chaos? Cardboard is done. Totes? They laugh at spills. Your textbooks, bedding, and that one sweatshirt you actually like will survive the inevitable water bottle incident.

4. No Assembly, No Tape, No Cleanup Nightmare

Cardboard boxes require tape, markers, and deconstruction on move-out day. You'll be breaking down boxes in your parent's driveway at 2 PM on May 15th, sweating in the Virginia heat. Totes? Empty them, stack them, we pick them up. Done in 10 minutes.

5. Your Stuff Doesn't Get Crushed

Fragile items (mirrors, artwork, electronics) survive tote rentals. Cardboard boxes get sat on, kicked, dropped, and stacked with 30 lbs of textbooks on top. One tote ruptures and your dorm room looks like a garage sale exploded.

How Many Totes Do You Actually Need?

Here's the real talk: most dorm move-ins need 20–30 totes. Here's why:

Total: 20–30 totes for a typical student. Our Standard package (30 totes + 1 dolly) is perfect for this. If you're minimal, Starter (20 totes) works. If you're living your best life and packed 15 sweaters, Family (45 totes) is there for you.

Pro Tips for Dorm Move-In Totes

1. Don't Overstuff

Our totes hold 50 lbs each and stack 5 high. Don't be a hero and pack them to 70 lbs. Your back will hate you, and you'll destroy the lid.

2. Pack by Category

All bedding together, all clothes together. On move-in day, you can unpack strategically instead of opening random totes to find your pillow.

3. Use Totes as Year-Round Storage

Many students keep totes in their dorm year-round for seasonal stuff. Lighter totes near the top of the closet, heavier ones at the bottom. It's free dorm storage.

4. Coordinate Pickup for May Move-Out

Call us at least 1 week before you need totes picked up. May is busy (everyone's moving), and we'll want to coordinate a time that works.

5. Check the Weather

Our totes are waterproof, so a little rain during delivery is fine. But try to schedule move-in for a day that isn't a torrential downpour.
